A new study warns that yo-yo dieting, a term for repeatedly losing and gaining weight, can significantly increase the risk of kidney disease in people with type 1 diabetes.
Diabetics whose weight fluctuates greatly have a 40 percent reduction in the ability of their kidneys to filter toxins from the blood.
We show that frequent changes in body weight are associated with an increased risk of kidney disease in people with type 1 diabetes, the researchers reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
“To our knowledge, this is the first study to show this association,” lead researcher Dr. Marion Camoin, from the University Hospital Center Bordeaux in France, said in a news release.
The researchers also said that for about 35 percent of men and 55 percent of women who yo-yo diet, this pattern of weight loss and regain increases the risk of heart disease in both healthy people and people with diabetes.
