Washington: NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has discovered the oldest and most distant galaxy ever discovered.
The discovered galaxy (JADES-GS-z14-0) belongs to the cosmic dawn, the early age of the universe. The Cosmic Dawn is the period a few million years after the Big Bang when the first galaxies formed.
Early galaxies can help scientists understand how gas, stars and black holes formed and changed in the early days of the universe, according to a NASA press release. These galaxies provide unique information.
This galaxy came into being 29 million years after the Big Bang. Astronomers have previously observed hundreds of galaxies that are about 650 million years old.
This distant galaxy was first observed in early 2023 while it was imaged in October of the same year. Later in January 2024, a camera on the James Webb Space Telescope observed the galaxy for 10 hours.
