Abu Hamdan: 30 people have been killed due to the collapse of a dam in Sudan, the flood of water has wiped out 20 villages.
According to foreign media reports, the Arbat Dam in Sudan’s eastern Red Sea collapsed, causing water to enter nearby villages, sweeping away many people.
According to the United Nations, twenty villages were wiped out by the water coming out of the dam. Thousands of people were displaced due to the bursting of Arbat Dam.
Sudan’s central health ministry says resources are being mobilized in the area to help those trapped.
The statement added that at least four people had died in the floodwaters but did not estimate how many were missing.
However, a local official told a Sudanese news site that he believed at least 60 people had been killed.
Amr Isa Tahir, head of water resources in the Red Sea state, said there had been extensive damage.
More than 100 people are missing and many other villagers have climbed to the tops of rocky hills to escape the rising waters, the Sudanese news agency said.
Located in the city of Abu Hamdan, 40 kilometers (25 mi) north of Port Sudan, the dam provided drinking water to the Red Sea city.
