Sweden: Scientists have succeeded in making a very fine version of gold ‘golden’.
Scientists have achieved this success after creating graphene with the help of a single layer of graphite atoms. Known as a miracle material, this material is surprisingly strong and can conduct heat and electricity better than copper.
Goldin was also formed under the same umbrella. Researchers have stretched the gold so much that it is about one atomic layer thick. And scientists like Griffin say the process endows it with a number of new properties that could lead to important discoveries in the future.
The researchers say the new material could be effective in everything from replacing carbon dioxide to purifying water and including communications technology.
According to the researchers, gold could be one of several such materials. Further investigations are underway to obtain similar results for other metals.
“If you make the material very fine, something extraordinary happens, like what happened with Griffin,” said researcher Shin Keshiwaya from Sweden’s Linköping University. A similar thing happened with gold.
He said that as you know gold is a metal, but if its thickness becomes one atom layer, gold can become a semiconductor.
