Scientists have found carnivorous squirrels in the US state of California for the first time, which has surprised experts.
These squirrels have often been seen stuffing their mouths with nuts, seeds or grains.
But the latest discovery, published in the Journal of Ethology, shows that squirrels can be opportunistic omnivores, meaning they eat all kinds of food.
In the study, scientists from the University of California Davis examined 74 interactions of squirrels during June and July 2024.
They found that more than 42 percent of the squirrels were observed hunting and eating small rodents.
