The Combined Maritime Forces were established in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. The mission of CTF 151 is to prevent piracy in its areas of jurisdiction. CTF 151 also works to prevent human trafficking, unregulated and illegal fishing. CTF 151 was established in January 2009. CTF 151 is a multinational force. Member countries provide their ships for CTF 151.
The primary objective of CTF 151 is to keep sea lanes open for trade and movement. CTF 151 works specifically against piracy. In 2010, 45 ships were targeted by piracy in the Gulf of Aden, while piracy has decreased significantly since CTF 151 was deployed.
