Tripoli: A Libyan court has sentenced 12 officials to prison in a case related to the destruction of dams by floods in Derna last year.
According to the report of the Reuters news agency, the Attorney General of Libya said that many dams were destroyed and thousands of citizens died as a result of floods in Darna last year, but now the court has sentenced 12 government officials.
The report said that the convicted officials were responsible for managing the country’s dams and were sentenced to 9 to 27 years in prison by the Darna Court of Appeal and acquitted 4 officials.
Derna is a Libyan coastal city with 125 thousand people, where the worst flood occurred due to storm Daniel in September last year and thousands of people died in the city and thousands went missing, many buildings and settlements were destroyed due to the destruction of dams .
The Attorney General in Tripoli said that the court has ordered three officials to return the illegally obtained money, but he did not reveal the names and positions of the said persons.
Judicial sources said the government officials were convicted for negligence, attempted murder and waste of national exchequer.
