WASHINGTON: Mental health problems have overtaken heart disease in terms of morbidity and early mortality, a new study has found.
According to a study published in The Lancet, the data shows that there has been an 18% increase in disability, illness and early death among people worldwide due to stress.
Scientists from the University of Washington, Auckland University and the WHO’s Brain Health Unit presented a joint study that found that there are 37 neurological conditions with a greater severity of adverse effects than previously thought.
These neurological conditions affect 43 percent of the world’s population, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, migraines, Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias and neurological damage, he said.
The researchers attributed the neurological problems of the global population to population growth, aging, climate change, poor nutrition and lifestyle factors.
