The Zimbabwean government has announced new licensing requirements for WhatsApp group admins. This move by the government is a step towards curbing misleading news and increasing accountability of social media.
According to the foreign news agency, the Zimbabwean government has set different license fees depending on the nature of the group. License fees range from $50 to $2,500.
Zimbabwe’s Information Minister Monica Mtsvangwa said the licensing process would help identify sources of fake news that cause violence and chaos.
The licensing process requires group admins to provide private information, which may lead to privacy issues.
The government defended its move to maintain security and law and order situation in the country.
