Aarhus: Half of people who suffer from a blood infection known as sepsis die within a few years, a new study suggests.
Danish researchers report that slightly more than 50 percent of patients admitted to the emergency department with sepsis die within two years.
“We found that certain factors increase the risk of death after sepsis, including the aging process,” said Finn Nielsen, a senior scientist in clinical epidemiology at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark.
In addition, dementia, heart disease, cancer, and having had sepsis in the last six months before hospitalization also increased the risk of dying during the median two-year period, Nelson added in a hospital news release. extended
