Islamabad: The Lahore High Court has said that it will not interfere in the government’s policy matters regarding the purchase of wheat.
A hearing was held in the Lahore High Court on the request of the Punjab government against not buying wheat from farmers and not giving them bardana. Justice Shahid Karim heard the application by Advocate Farhat Manzoor. Chief Secretary Punjab and others were made parties in the petition.
The court directed the Punjab cabinet to inform the court about the decision regarding wheat. The court said that the court will not interfere in the government’s policy matters, the court should be informed about the decision of the Punjab cabinet on wheat at the next hearing.
The petitioner took the stand that the government asked to continue the policy of buying wheat at Rs 3900 per maund, the farmers are not being provided timely bardana, the government was supposed to start buying wheat from the farmers from April 22. Since the purchase of wheat has not started, due to the rains, farmers are forced to sell the crop to the mafia at cheap prices.
It has been said in the stand that the court should order the government to immediately buy wheat from the farmers at the official rate and the court should provide bardana to the farmers.
