SAOPAULO: One person has been killed in two explosions in Brazil ahead of the G20 summit.
According to the World News Agency, the explosions took place near the Supreme Court in Sao Paulo, after which the Supreme Court was evacuated.
The first explosion occurred in a car park near the Supreme Court. The court confirmed in a statement that the judges had completed a full session before the explosions, and were quickly and safely evacuated. The federal police have deployed a bomb squad to investigate the explosions in central Brasilia.
The explosions killed one person in a square near Congress and the presidential palace, further increasing security concerns ahead of the country hosting the G20 summit.
A local Brazilian media outlet described the explosions as suicides.
A police officer told local media that the deceased man found in the square was carrying explosives, so his body would be carefully examined to rule out the risk of another explosion. He added that it was too early to say anything about the nature of the explosions.
The blasts were heard near the Plaza of the Three Powers, a famous square in Brasilia that connects Brazil’s three main government branches. It was the site of riots on January 8 last year when supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed government buildings to protest his election defeat.
