The US State Department emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of all prisoners in Pakistan, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Asked about the US ambassador’s meeting with PTI leaders during a news briefing in Washington on May 7, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Donald Bloom met with opposition leader Omar Ayub and others.
He said that Donald Bloom met the opposition leader and other senior members of the opposition in which economic reforms, human rights, regional security and bilateral relations were discussed.
Talking to PTI leaders about the ‘baseless’ allegations against Imran Khan and discussions on human rights, Matthew Miller reiterated the US stance on political neutrality.
He said that our position is the same as we have stated earlier, we have no position related to elections in Pakistan, we want to maintain basic human rights.
Matthew Miller also discussed the ‘warning reports’ by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer regarding the security of former Prime Minister Imran Khan imprisoned in Pakistan.
He said that Senator Chuck Schumer may have told the Pakistani ambassador in Washington that the safety of Imran Khan is the main priority of the United States, but I am not aware of this meeting.
He said that “Obviously, we want to see the protection and protection of every prisoner in the world, including Pakistan, every detained person, every prisoner is entitled to basic human rights and protection under the law.”
