A 7.4-magnitude earthquake wreaked havoc in eastern Taiwan, a tsunami warning was issued.
According to media reports, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter was 18 kilometers (11 mi) south of the city of Hualien, Taiwan, at a depth of 34.8 kilometers, while the Japan Meteorological Agency put the magnitude of the earthquake at 7.5 is stated.
The earthquake in Taiwan was so strong that it shook the southern islands of Japan badly, collapsing many buildings. The authorities have issued instructions to the citizens not to come out of their homes.
Seven people have been confirmed dead in the earthquake in Taiwan so far, while bodies continue to be found during relief operations. More than 700 people are injured who are being provided medical assistance.
Recall that in September 1999, Taiwan was hit by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake and nearly 2,400 people were killed in the deadliest natural disaster in the island’s history. About 1500 earthquakes are felt in Japan every year.
Japan and Taiwan generally suffer less from major earthquakes due to special construction techniques and strict building regulations.
Japan’s largest earthquake to date struck off the country’s northeast coast in March 2011, triggering a tsunami and leaving nearly 18,500 people dead or missing.
