Islamabad: Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani of Pakistan People’s Party was elected unopposed as the chairman of Senate and Sardar Syedal Khan of Muslim League-N was elected as deputy chairman.
Presiding Officer Ishaq Dar announced the victory of Yousuf Raza Gilani and Sardar Syedal Khan after which PTI Senators surrounded the Chairman Senate Dice. Yusuf Raza Gilani took the seat after taking the oath of Chairman Senate.
Chairman Senate Yusuf Raza Gilani administered oath to Syedal Khan Nasir as Deputy Chairman.
The Senate Secretariat has prepared a letter regarding independent senators sitting in government and opposition benches. Members have also asked for names for the opposition leader.
Newly elected Chairman Senate Yusuf Raza Gilani while congratulating all the senators on Eid said that I am grateful to the party leadership and allied parties, I will try to fulfill the expectations of all the members, the Senate is a symbol of the Federation.
The Chairman Senate adjourned the meeting of the Senate for an indefinite period.
Earlier, Ishaq Dar administered the oath to the newly elected members in the Senate meeting to administer oath to the newly elected members of the Senate. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Yusuf Raza Gilani and other members took oath.
PTI members protested at the start of the meeting and raised slogans of disapproval of stolen Senate election. PTI’s Ali Zafar expressed his views and said that the meeting should be postponed until the KP Senator comes.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has congratulated and wished Yusuf Raza Gilani as Senate Chairman and Syedal Khan Nasir as Deputy Chairman Senate. He said that the election of Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman is a continuation of the democratic process.
The Prime Minister said in a congratulatory message to the newly elected Chairman Senate and Deputy Chairman Senate that he hopes that you will play your role for the upliftment of the Constitution and the development of the country. It is hoped that you will play a full role in effective legislation for the welfare of the people and the development and prosperity of the country.
It should be noted that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had boycotted the election of Senate Chairman and Deputy Chairman.
