Colombo: Sri Lanka’s newly elected President Anu Ra Kumara was sworn in while Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena resigned.
According to the World News Agency, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Dinesh Gunawardena announced his resignation from his post on his social media accounts.
Dinesh Gunawardena assumed the post of Prime Minister on July 22, 2022 when the country was suffering from severe financial and political crisis. The country had defaulted.
People stormed the presidential palace and parliament. The country was facing shortages of petrol, food and medicines due to the end of the dollar.
Under the leadership of President Ranil Wickramasinghe, Dinesh Gunawardena took several drastic measures to bring the country out of crisis, including tax hikes.
The IMF bailout package was approved but to meet the strict conditions they were under pressure to hold fresh elections so that the decision would be made by an elected government.
The results of the presidential election were announced yesterday, in which Marxist leader Anu Ra Kumara, who entered the field of politics after military struggle, became the president by getting 52 percent of the votes.
The swearing-in ceremony of Sri Lanka’s 55-year-old new president, Anu Ra Kumara, was attended by opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, prominent political leaders, military leaders and ministers of the former government.
