Seoul: A South Korean politician has blamed women for the increase in male suicides.
In a report, Seoul City Councilor Kim Ki-duk said that the increasing participation of women in the workforce over the years has made it harder for men to get jobs and find women who want to marry them. .
He said that the country’s society has gradually come under the dominance of women due to which the trend of suicide among men is increasing.
South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates among the richest countries in the world.
Councilor Kim Ki-duk’s statement is being heavily criticized and her statement is being termed as an attempt to create gender conflict.
The report, published on the city council’s official website, shows that the number of suicide attempts by the river has increased from 430 in 2018 to 1,035 in 2023, with men making up the majority of suicide attempts. The ratio has increased from 67 percent to 77 percent.
Suicide prevention experts have expressed concern over Kim Jong-un’s report.
Song Han, a professor of mental health at Seoul’s Yonsei University, told the British news agency that it was dangerous and unwise to make such claims without adequate evidence.
