Edinburgh: Scottish First Minister Hamza Yusuf may announce his resignation sometime today.
According to the BBC, the first Muslim First Minister of Scotland, Hamza Yusuf, is facing a motion of no confidence from the Scottish Labor Party and the Green Party, and he has also refused to form a coalition with the Alba Party.
A BBC report claims that in this situation, Scotland’s first Muslim First Minister, Hamza Yusuf, may have to resign when the power-sharing deal ends.
The BBC report said that Hamza Yusuf, who is of Pakistani origin, is under intense pressure from the opposition parties to resign and has no other option but to resign to avoid a no-confidence motion.
Remember that last week, Hamza Yusuf abruptly terminated the power-sharing agreement between his party, the Scottish National Party and the Green Party, and expressed his intention to run a minority government together with other opposition parties.
However, instead of forming a new cabinet together with Hamza Yusuf, the opposition parties submitted a motion of no confidence.
Meanwhile, the ruling party has contacted former party leader John Sweeney to replace Hamza Yusuf as interim prime minister, who seems to be under pressure from the party to resign.
It should be remembered that the Pakistani-born Hamza Yusuf’s hold on the party’s government was weakened last year due to a funding scandal and the resignation of a party leader.
A leadership crisis and a no-confidence motion against the Scottish government have exacerbated the problems facing Hamza Youssef’s Scottish National Party, which is losing 17 years of popular support.
If Hamza Yusuf does not resign and faces a no-confidence motion, parliament will have 28 days to find his replacement in the event of a defeat.
It should be noted that Hamza Yusuf assumed this position in March 2023 after the resignation of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon over the party funding scandal. Before becoming First Minister, he was Minister for Health and Justice in the Scottish Government.
