ISLAMABAD: The public hanging bill for sexual assault by Jamaat-e-Islami was presented in the Senate, which was opposed by other parties including People’s Party, PML-N and PTI.
Senator Mushtaq Ahmed of Jamaat-e-Islami presented the bill for public hanging for rape in the Senate. A senator from Muslim League-Q, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam and PTI supported the bill for public hanging of rape accused.
PPP Senator Sherry Rehman said that public hanging spread brutality in the country and PPP had opposed death penalty for rape, improve policing and not death penalty laws.
He said that Pakistan ranks fifth in the world in terms of death penalty, public hanging does not beautify the society of 21st century, public hanging will not stop crime.
PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui also opposed the law on public hanging and said that the hanging should be kept up to the gallows. Leader of the House Ishaq Dar said that the death penalty exists in the law, so he opposes public hanging.
PTI also opposed the public hanging of rape accused. Barrister Ali Zafar said that the strictest punishment in the current law is the death penalty, which he supports, and opposes public hanging. Instead of public and street punishments, work should be done to improve the justice system.
Senator Kamil Ali Agha of QL, who supported the bill, said that the video is released after the death sentence by injection in America and public beheading in Saudi Arabia. What is happening in Islam is not important, what Islam says is important.
PTI’s second senator, Hamayo Mehmed, supported the public execution of the rape accused. Senator Hamayo Mohmand said that crimes are less in countries where there are public punishments, thefts are also less where hands are cut off.
