WASHINGTON: Oil product giants and plastic manufacturers have known for more than 30 years that recycling is not a permanent solution to plastic waste, a report claims.
A report by the Center for Climate Integrity (CCI) revealed that oil companies and plastics companies have misled people to avoid regulatory action and save their revenue.
The report stated that the plastics industry was aware that certain plastics could not be recycled, making their sorting difficult and expensive.
According to the report, even though companies knew that recycling was not economically or technically feasible, recycling was still being used in their marketing campaigns.
CCI used a past study and some documents detailing the recycling difficulties of the plastic and petrochemical industries and how plastic products affect our planet.
The body’s president, Richard Wiles, said research evidence showed fossil fuel companies had long known and misrepresented that their products were causing climate change and had misled people about recycling plastics. It is a misrepresentation.
