Myanmar: Myanmar’s pro-democracy central opposition party said its armed wing carried out a drone attack on a military headquarters and an airport in the capital Naypyidaw, while the military government claimed to have destroyed more than a dozen drones.
According to Al Jazeera’s report, the military government-run TV channel said in the report that 13 drones flying in the capital of Myanmar were shot down and the attack was foiled, no casualties or financial losses were reported.
The statement said that an attack by terrorists to destroy important installations in the capital has been thwarted.
The military government did not specify the target of the attack, but in the video broadcast, nine drones were seen, some of which were destroyed, and four of the 13 drones were carrying explosives.
Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) and the People’s Defense Force, an anti-military armed group, claimed responsibility for what they described as a coordinated attack on military headquarters and an air force base.
A NUG official said the drone strike was a success because it had ignored the army and showed that its generals now had to hide somewhere.
Spokesperson NUG Kyawza said, without elaborating on the targeting, that the military government is currently pushing for recruitment and causing fear among civilians.
“With this attack on their center, we want to highlight that now they have no safe place,” he said.
NGU permanent secretary Naing Htu Ong told the party’s media channel in an interview that Army Chief Min Ong Hlaing’s house was targeted and 30 drones were used.
He said he had spent hundreds of millions of dollars on defense systems, including air defenses, where the military council believed attacks could not happen.
Recall that the military in Myanmar took over in February 2021 by ousting the then popularly elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, following which peaceful protests broke out across the country, which were brutally suppressed. And security forces killed hundreds of civilians as armed resistance erupted and the country descended into civil war.
