Lahore: Maryam Nawaz, the joint candidate of PML-N and allies, was elected as the Chief Minister of Punjab and she took the oath. Maryam Nawaz is the first woman Chief Minister in the history of the country.
Speaker Punjab Assembly announced the results after the counting of votes was completed. Maryam Nawaz, the joint candidate of Muslim League and allies, was elected Chief Minister of Punjab by getting 220 votes. Rana Aftab could not get any vote due to opposition boycott and walkout. Maryam Nawaz took over the Speaker’s seat after the Speaker’s announcement.
A meeting of the Punjab Assembly was held under the chairmanship of Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan. PML-N nominated Maryam Nawaz and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) nominated Rana Aftab Ahmed Khan as the candidate for Chief Minister of Punjab. Two more members of Punjab Assembly Sardar Khizr Hussain Mazari and Tahir Qaisrani took oath today. Tahir Qaisrani joined IPP and Sardar Khizr Mazari joined PML-N.
Rana Aftab wanted to speak on the point of order but the speaker did not allow it. Malik Ahmed said that today’s meeting is only for the election of the Chief Minister. Members of the Sunni Ittehad Council walked out of the House after not being allowed to speak.
Maryam Nawaz asked to persuade the opposition to bring it back to the house, on which 6 league leaders arrived to persuade the opposition. Maryam Nawaz said that the speaker should allow the opposition to speak, whether you are losing or winning, competition is the beauty of democracy.
The House of Punjab Assembly currently consists of 327 members. The PML-N has the support of 224 members while the Sunni Ittehad Council has 103 members. The Leader of the House had to get a majority of 186 members.
