ISLAMABAD: The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has initiated action against 15 beverage companies for spreading false and misleading information through their product packaging.
According to the details, CCP’s preliminary investigation revealed that these manufacturers prominently display images of various fruits, vegetables and herbs on their packaging, creating the impression that their products are purely photographic. are extracted from the ingredients or contain pulp, paste or natural flavors of the ingredients depicted in them.
The CCP has also noted with great concern the disparity between the packaging of the same product sold in Pakistan and that exported for sale in international markets. Likewise, differences may be seen in ingredient descriptions and pictured ingredients on the same label.
It is noteworthy that two leading manufacturers have stopped publishing similar fruit graphics on products designed for international markets, indicating a deliberate attempt to mislead Pakistani consumers.
Such misrepresentations mislead consumers about the true nature and nutritional value of the product, especially when these claims cannot be substantiated. Use of unsubstantiated ingredient images on product packaging falls under the category of deceptive marketing practices under Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010.
The CCP requires manufacturers to maintain uniformity in the packaging and labeling of their products for domestic and international markets to avoid double standards. accurately reflect the actual content of
CCP also urges consumers to exercise due caution and not rely on attractive fruit images while purchasing beverages. Consumers are also encouraged to immediately notify the Commission of false and/or misleading information on packaging.
