Farmers are protesting nationwide against the anti-farmer policies of the Modi government in India.
According to Indian media, the struggle for the rights of farmers in the Indian states of Haryana and Punjab is ongoing. After the failure of negotiations between farmer unions and the government, the Delhi Chalo movement turned into a rail blockade movement and a Punjab bandh has been called today. The Punjab bandh call has been given by the Kisan Mazdoor Morja and Kisan Sangthan Morcha in favor of Jagjit Singh Dalawal, who has been on a hunger strike for more than a month.
There is a complete strike in Punjab today from 7 am to 4 pm. All roads are blocked. Markets and business centers are closed and traffic is absent from the roads. The state government has tightened security and deployed additional forces at important places. Farmers have announced to stage a sit-in at the toll plaza. Punjab University and Guru Nanak University have postponed exams due to the strike call.
In support of the Punjab Bandh call, the supply of fruits and vegetables in the markets will be stopped, milk vendors will also not come on the roads. Private and public buses will not ply on the roads as farmer unions have announced to block the roads at 200 places and railway tracks at 50 places. The farmer organizations are demanding the implementation of 13 agricultural reforms, including legal guarantee for all crops.
