According to Iranian media, Peshmerga said in clear terms that “we will not negotiate under threats, do what you have to do.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had also previously stated that Iran would not negotiate under any kind of pressure. His statement came after Trump’s revelation that he had sent a letter to Iran seeking talks.
Trump has reinstated a policy of maximum pressure on Iran, which aims to isolate Iran from the global economy and reduce its oil exports to near zero.
Trump had said in an interview with Fox Business that there were only two ways to deal with Iran: either military action or a new nuclear deal.
Iran has long denied that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons, but according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran is enriching uranium to 60 percent, close to the 90 percent level at which it could produce nuclear weapons.
Iran has accelerated its nuclear activities since 2019, when the United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed tough sanctions that have severely hit the Iranian economy.
