Oslo: Scientists have compiled a list of more than 16,000 chemicals in plastic products in a new study, in which more than 4,000 chemicals were found to be harmful to human health and the environment.
In a review report called Plastic Chem, researchers identified chemicals used in plastics that have impacts on the environment and human health.
The review report found that the number of plastic chemicals was actually higher than what was known, and that 4,200 (26 percent) of these compounds were found to be persistent, biodegradable, and mobile. or are cause for concern due to their toxic nature.
Co-author of the report, published by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), Mary Luseth, said that the report will provide the basis for a policy to control plastics and plastic chemicals.
The report identified more than 400 chemicals that are used in commonly used plastics and that all these plastics cause hazardous chemicals to leak into the environment, the researchers said.
It should be noted that past research has shown that chemicals such as phthalates used in plastics can affect the reproductive system and childhood exposure to these chemicals is associated with asthma.
