ISLAMABAD: The approval of the constitutional amendments by the cabinet today became uncertain, due to which there is a possibility that the constitutional amendments will not be presented in the National Assembly today.
Sources say that the meeting of the federal cabinet has not been called yet, while a final decision will be taken only after consensus in the special committee on constitutional amendments. JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman is trying to have a unanimous decision on the constitutional amendments.
According to the sources, the deadlock between the government and the opposition parties on the constitutional amendments is still maintained. Only after consensus on the constitutional amendments, the draft will be presented to the National Assembly and Senate.
In the current situation, PML-N leader and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has left the federal capital Islamabad for Lahore, after which Hamza Shahbaz also left for Lahore.
Sources say that when the decision is made in the special committee and Maulana Fazlur Rahman agrees, then this bill will be presented in the federal cabinet and then it will be presented in the National Assembly and Senate.
Meanwhile, the constitutional amendment bill is unlikely to be presented in the National Assembly even today. The 3-point agenda of the National Assembly session has been released, which includes the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2024. Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar will present the bill in the House. Apart from this, the motion to express gratitude for the joint address of the President to both houses of the country is also included in the agenda.
It should be noted that the constitutional amendment bill could not be presented in the parliament even yesterday, the reason for which is that there is no consensus with the opposition and Maulana Fazlur Rehman despite the efforts of the government. The government has not yet been able to get the support of two-thirds of the members of the assembly.
