CAIRO: Arab countries have rejected US President Donald Trump’s plan to occupy Gaza and expel Palestinians and have supported Egypt’s alternative plan.
The extraordinary meeting held in Cairo on Tuesday was attended by leaders of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Syria and other Arab countries. The aim of the meeting was to adopt a common Arab position against the US plan, which discussed the reconstruction of Gaza and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Egypt announced a proposed 5-year plan worth 53 billion dollars, which includes the construction of millions of homes in Gaza, a commercial port and an airport, and elections in the Palestinian territories and efforts for a two-state solution.
At the end of the meeting, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abu al-Gheit said that Egypt’s plan has now become a common Arab plan.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said the plan would allow Palestinians to remain on their land, and would establish an administrative committee to oversee the administration of Gaza and humanitarian aid.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for the full transfer of Gaza’s administration to the Palestinian Authority.
