Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting of the federal cabinet on Sunday, the draft constitutional amendments will be approved in the cabinet meeting. Later these amendments will be presented in the session of the National Assembly.
Last night, a dinner was organized in honor of PML-N and allied parties in the prime minister’s office, MQM, BAP, National Party and other allies attended the dinner. The Prime Minister has directed the members to ensure their attendance in Parliament today. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has explained some of the details of the constitutional amendment proposed by the government.
In the dinner given by the Prime Minister to the coalition parties, Ishaq Dar informed the participants about the constitutional amendment and told that a constitutional court will be established in the Supreme Court. It is proposed to establish a separate court for public interest, therefore the constitution is being amended. The members also assured the Prime Minister of their support in the constitutional amendment.
Addressing the dinner, the Prime Minister said that the country cannot afford any more instability, the forces creating instability must be boycotted. Parliament is the supreme institution of the country and to maintain its sanctity, it is necessary to legislate in the national and public interest. The Prime Minister took a pledge from the parliamentarians that they will work hard for the development of the country.
Earlier, a late night meeting was held between Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, which has emerged as an important political development. According to sources, in this meeting, the Prime Minister once again invited Maulana Fazlur Rehman to join the government. In this meeting held after consultation with the legal team, the constitutional amendment was also discussed, about which Maulana Fazlur Rehman talked about taking the Prime Minister into confidence.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman demanded the constitutional amendment draft and said that he would respond after consulting his party. Sources say that Maulana Fazlur Rehman refused to support the Prime Minister while giving a clear answer. Later, the government delegation met Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
The delegation included Prime Minister Nazir Tarar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The government delegation informed Maulana Fazlur Rehman about the proposed constitutional amendment and judicial reforms. Meanwhile, the leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf also reached Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s residence to seek support for their position on the proposed constitutional amendment, but seeing the government officials there, the PTI leaders returned without meeting the JUI chief. .
The government has claimed that they have a two-thirds majority, the amendment has removed loopholes left in the Nineteenth Amendment. According to the sources, the main purpose of these amendments is to reform the judiciary and various constitutional institutions. It includes proposals such as extending the tenure of Supreme Court judges and setting up a Constitutional Court, which aims to reduce the burden of constitutional and public interest cases by separating them from the Supreme Court. The Constitutional Court will have 5 members, which will hear the interpretation of the Constitution and other constitutional issues.
Members of the Parliamentary Committee will also be included in the Judicial Commission. The tenure of the Chief Justice or the judges could not be decided. In future, five names will be sent to the Prime Minister for the appointment of the Chief Justice and the Prime Minister will appoint the new Chief Justice from among them. According to sources, the government has also decided to amend Article 63A. Around 25 amendment proposals have been placed in the constitutional package.
