Geneva: Pakistan is likely to be elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the eighth time, which would be a record.
According to the World News Agency, Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia are competing for 5 non-permanent seats in the 15-member UN Security Council.
All these five candidates have served as non-permanent members before, in which Pakistan has been elected 7 times, Panama 5 times, Denmark 4 times, Greece 2 times and Somalia once.
The prospects of Pakistan being elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the eighth consecutive time are bright. If it does, it will be a record.
In this election, one candidate each from African group, Asia Pacific group, Latin American and Caribbean group is chosen for 5 seats while two seats are for Western European and other group.
Countries in each group put forward a single consensus candidate known as a “clean slate”. Pakistan is a candidate in Asia Pacific group.
The five new members elected this year will take up their seats on January 1, 2025 and their membership will expire on December 31, 2026, after which they will be re-elected.
