ISLAMABAD: With the cooperation of China, a plan is being prepared to transfer Pakistan Railways to solar energy to avoid huge financial losses and to lay the foundation of green energy in the railway infrastructure.
According to Gwadar Pro, 100 sites with high power consumption have been identified initially and once switched to solar power, the institution will save at least Rs.1 billion annually.

According to Gwadar Pro, the railway administration has assigned Nespak to complete the feasibility study of installing solar panels at selected sites, adding that 16,535 out of 26,660 railway residential complexes have been distributed so far. Distribution companies (Discos) and Karachi Electric have been transferred to protect them from financial losses.
He added that “electricity meters of residential complexes are being transferred to discos by the department and this initiative has resulted in savings of Rs 1.3 billion so far.
