ISLAMABAD: Voting for 19 Senate seats is going on in the National and Provincial Assemblies, while the election has been postponed for 11 seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
This year, 48 Senate seats were vacant, out of which 18 senators were elected unopposed. All 11 candidates have been elected from Balochistan Assembly while 7 candidates have been elected unopposed in Punjab. Today, there was competition on the remaining 30 seats, but due to the postponement of the elections on 11 seats of KP, now the competition is on for 19 seats.
The senator will be elected for 6 years. Voting started from 9 am and will continue till 4 pm.
Islamabad
There is a contest between 4 candidates for one technocrat and one general seat. On the Technocrat seat, PML-N candidate Ishaq Dar is competing with Sunni Ittehad Council candidate Raja Ansar Mehmood. 2 candidates are contesting for the general seat. Rana Mehmoodul Hasan from the People’s Party, Farzan Ali Shah from the Sunni Ittehad Council is the candidate.
Sindh
There are 20 candidates for 12 Senate seats.
Punjab
There were 12 vacant seats in Punjab, out of which the candidates won unopposed in 7 and today the competition is going on for 5 seats. 2 women, 2 technocrat and 1 minority candidates are in fray.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Elections on 11 seats of Senate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been postponed.
Ahmed Karim Kundi, the opposition leader of PPP in the KP Assembly, submitted a petition containing the signatures of the members who were not sworn in to the Provincial Election Commissioner, in which it was said that despite the clear instructions of the Election Commission, the oath is not being administered. The Senate elections should be postponed, first we should be sworn in and then the Senate elections should be held.
On the request of the opposition, the Election Commission postponed the elections on 11 seats in KP.
Balochistan
All 11 candidates have been elected unopposed from Balochistan Assembly.
