LAHORE: The session of Punjab Assembly resumed after a break in which the members of the assembly took oath, Speaker Sabatin Khan took oath from the members, the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Punjab Assembly will be elected tomorrow through secret ballot.
The Punjab Assembly session started today under the chairmanship of Speaker Sabatin Khan. The PML-N members requested the Speaker to take oath, but the Speaker adjourned the meeting without taking the oath and said that he is issuing production orders for PTI’s nominated Chief Minister Aslam Iqbal.
As soon as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members entered the House, sloganeering started. PTI members raised slogans of Imran Khan and PML-N members of Nawaz Sharif. Slogans of ghari chor and tuber chor were also raised. PTI’s nominated candidate for the post of Chief Minister Aslam Iqbal could not reach the assembly. 215 members of PML-N and allies while 97 members of Sunni Ittehad Council are participating in the meeting.
Government members have been allotted seats to the right of the Speaker while opposition MLAs have been allotted seats to the left of the Speaker. The seats allotted to the Sunni Alliance Council are still vacant.
After the Friday prayer break, the meeting resumed in which Speaker Sabtain Khan administered the oath to the newly elected members of the assembly. After the oath, the members congratulated each other.
The Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly will be elected tomorrow through secret balloting. Nomination papers will be collected before 5 pm today, scrutiny will also be held today.
Before the meeting, a meeting of the provincial parliamentary party of Muslim League-N was held. The meeting of the parliamentary party of Muslim League-N was presided over by Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz in the Assembly Chamber. Members of Parliament of People’s Party and Muslim League-Q were also invited to the meeting of the parliamentary party. On the other hand, PTI has decided to protest for not getting reserved seats.
It should be noted that the new Punjab Assembly has been elected as a result of the general elections held on February 8, 2024. The Muslim League-N has nominated Maryam Nawaz as the candidate for the election of the Chief Minister of Punjab, while the Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Sunni Ittehad Council have nominated Mian Aslam Iqbal as the candidate for the Chief Minister.
Strict security arrangements have been made on the occasion of the inaugural session of the Punjab Assembly and the roads leading to the assembly have been closed for traffic.
