Pakistan Dominant 9-Wicket Win Against New Zealand in 3rd T20I

Pakistan crushed New Zealand by 9 wickets in the 3rd T20I as Hasan Nawaz’s unbeaten 105* off 45 balls powered a dominant 205-run chase.

Pakistan’s Dominant Win in 3rd T20I:

The third Twenty20 International between Pakistan and New Zealand took place at Eden Park in Auckland on March 21, 2025. Pakistan put up a strong display, winning by nine wickets, which not only preserved the five-match series but also demonstrated the rise of fresh players in their roster. Mark Chapman’s scorching 94 off 44 balls propelled New Zealand to 204 runs earlier.

But important breakthroughs were achieved by Pakistan’s bowlers, particularly Shaheen Afridi (2/36) and Haris Rauf (3/29). Pakistan’s confidence for the remaining series was bolstered by the match, which showcased their budding stars and impressive all-around play.

New Zealand’s Innings:

New Zealand chose to bat first after winning the toss to create a difficult target. Their innings got off to a rough start when opener Finn Allen was dismissed early after falling for a duck off the accurate bowling of Shaheen Shah Afridi. But with a quick partnership, wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert and Mark Chapman kept the innings steady.

Specifically, Chapman was in dazzling form. His aggressive style overpowered the Pakistani bowlers as he unleashed a barrage of strikes. Eleven boundaries and four imposing sixes were part of his 94-run innings off just 44 balls, which represented a strike rate of more than 213. Chapman moved the field with accuracy, demonstrating his ability to manage both pace and spin.

Despite Chapman’s heroics, New Zealand’s middle and lower order could not capitalize fully on the platform set. Michael Bracewell contributed a quickfire 31 off 18 balls, but regular wickets in the latter stages curtailed their momentum. The hosts concluded their innings at 204 all out, a total that seemed competitive on the traditionally high-scoring Eden Park surface.

Pakistan’s Bowling:

Pakistan’s bowling attack exhibited a mix of experience and youthful exuberance. Haris Rauf emerged as the standout bowler, claiming three wickets for 29 runs in his four-over spell. His ability to deliver accurate yorkers and deceptive slower balls proved crucial in containing the New Zealand batsmen during the death overs.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, leading the pace attack, provided early breakthroughs and maintained pressure with his disciplined line and length. He finished with figures of 2 for 36, showcasing his knack for delivering in crucial moments. Spinner Abrar Ahmed also played a vital role, picking up two wickets for 43 runs, and demonstrating his potential as a future mainstay in Pakistan’s spin department.

Pakistan’s Chase: Hasan Nawaz Show

Chasing a daunting target of 205, Pakistan needed a solid start to build momentum. Openers Mohammad Haris and Hasan Nawaz rose to the occasion spectacularly. They launched an all-out assault on the New Zealand bowlers, racing to 74 runs within the first six overs, their highest powerplay total in T20Is.

Haris’s quickfire 41 off 20 balls set the tone, but it was Hasan Nawaz who stole the spotlight. After recording ducks in his first two international innings, Nawaz showcased resilience and flair, crafting an unbeaten 105 runs off just 45 deliveries. His innings, laced with 10 fours and seven sixes, not only marked his maiden T20I century but also registered as the fastest hundred by a Pakistani in T20Is, achieved in just 44 balls.

Nawaz’s shot selection was impeccable, and his ability to find gaps and clear boundaries at will left the New Zealand bowlers scrambling for answers. His dominance was such that Pakistan’s required run rate never escalated beyond control.

Captain’s Support:

Agha Salman, the captain, was instrumental in Pakistan’s victorious chase against New Zealand. To keep the momentum flowing after Mohammed Haris was fired, Salman teamed up with Hasan Nawaz. With a cool knock of 51* from 31 balls, he kept Pakistan in command. Salman effectively rotated the strike to keep any pressure from mounting on the batting side while Nawaz attacked.

In addition to his batting prowess, Salman’s team-winning leadership was crucial. His composed demeanour on the field enabled Pakistan to carry out its pursuit of perfection. He was instrumental in ensuring Pakistan’s resounding nine-wicket victory in the third Twenty20 International by backing Nawaz’s aggressive strategy and preserving innings stability.

Pakistan’s Fielding Excellence:

Pakistan’s fielding played a crucial role in their dominant victory over New Zealand. The team showed sharp reflexes, quick movement, and excellent catching skills, preventing New Zealand from scoring even more runs. Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan were particularly outstanding in the outfield, saving crucial boundaries and keeping pressure on the batsmen. Hasan Ali’s direct hit to dismiss Daryl Mitchell was a game-changing moment that further tilted the momentum in Pakistan’s favour.  With such an improved fielding performance, Pakistan proved that they are working on all aspects of the game to compete at the highest level.

Fans’ Reactions and Future Prospects:

The thrilling victory sparked celebrations among Pakistan cricket fans, who praised the team’s remarkable comeback in the series. Social media buzzed with admiration for Hasan Nawaz’s century, with many calling him the next big star in Pakistan cricket. Cricket experts also lauded Agha Salman’s calm leadership and Pakistan’s aggressive yet calculated approach.

With this win, Pakistan has gained the confidence needed to challenge New Zealand in the remaining matches. If they continue this form, they have a strong chance of leveling the series and finishing on a high note.

Conclusion:

Pakistan reached 207 for the loss of a single wicket in just 16 overs, capping an impressive chase. This triumph highlighted Pakistan’s batting depth and the rise of new match-winners in addition to preserving the series at 1-2. Hasan Nawaz made a spectacular debut on the global scene with an explosive century that will live on in memory. His performance, along with his clever bowling and wise leadership, shows that Pakistan cricket is headed in the right direction as they continue to combine seasoned players with up-and-coming talent.

As the series progresses, both teams will look to adjust strategies and address shortcomings. For New Zealand, tightening their bowling in the powerplay and middle overs will be crucial. Pakistan, buoyed by this victory, will aim to maintain their aggressive approach and level the series in the upcoming matches. Cricket enthusiasts worldwide will keenly follow the remaining fixtures, anticipating more thrilling encounters between these two competitive sides.
