Guwahati: A 26-year-old man was shot dead by Border Security Force personnel in the Indian state of Assam.
According to Indian media, Indian Security Force personnel shot and killed a Muslim youth named Shaheenul Islam during a patrol at dawn in Salmara Mankachar border area of Assam state.
A spokesperson of India’s Border Security Force said that Shaheenul Islam, a youth, was trying to smuggle cattle into Bangladesh and tried to escape despite being signaled to stop at the border.
The spokesman, however, did not say whether the Muslim youth was armed or what threat he posed to the Indian Border Security Force that the officers had to fire directly at the youth.
On protests by local Muslim parties and human rights organizations, Indian security forces have assured a transparent investigation into the incident, but it should be noted that no action has ever been taken on any such inquiry.
At the end of last year, a Muslim cattle trader was killed in firing by Indian security forces, while a similar incident took place two months ago.
