California: Instant messaging application Signal is going to introduce a username feature in the next few weeks.
The feature being tested in the beta version will help users connect with other people without giving out their phone numbers.
To use this feature, users will be able to create a username for themselves by going to the app’s settings and selecting the profile option. After creating a unique username, users can also create a QR code and link that will allow others to access the user’s username in the app.
In the new chat bar in the app, one can easily contact another person by searching for the username.
Users will have the option to change their username at any time, but in such event another user will be able to use the changed username.
Signal’s username feature is different from account names on other social media platforms. Rather, with its help, people can be contacted without a phone number.
This feature was tested by the app last year.
