During a ceremony at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the 272 peacekeepers from the Pakistani unit, known as the Blue Helmets, received United Nations medals for their tireless work in building and maintaining dams to redirect floodwaters, protecting internally displaced persons camps housing millions.
Thanks to the efforts of the Pakistani peacekeeping force, surrounding areas, infrastructure, and essential services were safeguarded from the floods. At the conclusion of this mission, the Pakistani unit was awarded a certificate of commendation for outstanding performance, and 23 soldiers received the prestigious ‘Force Commander Commendation Card.’ The Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, Lt. Gen. Mohan Subramaniam, praised the dedication and efficiency of the Pakistani unit, highlighting their significant contributions to important engineering projects completed on time and within budget. Their genuine efforts reflect their strong professional commitment. A press release noted, “Despite facing complex challenges such as climate disasters, food crises, conflicts, and disease outbreaks, the dedication of Pakistani peacekeepers has remained steadfast.” Thanks to their work, the residents of Bentio felt hopeful and empowered to pursue a normal life. Their actions highlight the crucial role of UN peacekeeping missions in addressing environmental and humanitarian crises. As the unit prepares to welcome the next group of Pakistani Army Engineers, they are leaving behind a legacy of safety and resilience in Bentio, the statement added.
