Breti Silva: A cyber security company has disclosed that millions of Facebook accounts were leaked online, exposing Facebook Marketplace users to phishing (spoofing messages and emails), theft of sensitive private information and cyber attacks. There are serious risks.
The massive data leak included the phone numbers, email addresses and private information of over 200,000 users. This data set is available for sale to cybercriminals for new fraud schemes.
According to Jack Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at eSet, a user should change their password if they believe they have been targeted.
This data was posted on a hacking forum by a famous cybercriminal named ‘IntelBroker’.
In the post, IntelBroker claimed that in October 2023, a cybercriminal (named ‘Algotson’ on Discord) broke into a contractor monitoring Facebook’s cloud services and stole a partial database of two hundred thousand entries.
The leaked data contained a lot of private information including name, phone number, email address, Facebook ID and Facebook profile information.
A technology website, Bleeping Computer, has confirmed this data. The website verifies the email address and phone number in the sample data and validates the data.
