Arshad Nadeem Qualifies for Commonwealth Games 2026 Javelin Final
BIRMINGHAM, July 30: Pakistan’s Olympic and Commonwealth champion Arshad Nadeem has qualified for the men’s javelin throw final at the Commonwealth Games 2026, taking another step toward defending the historic gold medal he won four years ago.
Nadeem secured his place in the final after producing a best throw of 78.63 metres during the qualification round. The distance earned him seventh place overall, comfortably placing him among the top 12 athletes advancing to the medal event.
No athlete managed to achieve the automatic qualifying standard of 84 metres, forcing officials to determine the finalists based on the best performances in the qualification round.
Sri Lanka’s Ramesh Tharanga topped the standings with a throw of 82.84 metres, while Anderson Peters of Grenada finished second and Douw Smit of South Africa claimed third place.
India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra also progressed to the final after recording a best throw of 79.61 metres, finishing fifth in the qualification rankings.
Pakistan’s Yasir Sultan narrowly missed out on a place in the final. His best effort of 74.36 metres saw him finish 14th, two places outside the qualification cutoff.
All eyes will now be on Arshad Nadeem as he prepares to defend his Commonwealth title. The Pakistani star created history at the 2022 Commonwealth Games by winning the gold medal with a record-breaking 90.18-metre throw. The performance not only established a new Commonwealth Games record but also made him the first South Asian athlete to throw the javelin beyond the 90-metre mark.
With the final approaching, Pakistan will be hoping Nadeem can once again deliver a medal-winning performance and add another major international title to his remarkable career.
