Faryal Talpur Commends BISP Reforms, Digital Payments and Expanded Social Protection Programmes

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Women Wing President Faryal Talpur on Wednesday praised the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) for introducing reforms aimed at improving transparency, digital transformation, and expanding social protection for vulnerable families across Pakistan.

Faryal Talpur visited the BISP Headquarters, where she was welcomed by BISP Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid and Secretary Amer Ali Ahmad. She was accompanied by Sindh Government Spokesperson Sadia Javed.

During the visit, Secretary Amer Ali Ahmad briefed her on BISP’s progress, institutional reforms, the new digital payment system, and the programme’s growing role in strengthening Pakistan’s social protection framework.

Officials informed her that the federal government has allocated Rs838 billion for BISP in the current fiscal year. Under the Benazir Kafaalat Programme, quarterly financial assistance of Rs14,500 is being provided to 10.3 million deserving families.

She was also informed that the Benazir Taleemi Wazaif Programme is supporting the education of 12.4 million children, while the Benazir Nashonuma Programme is providing nutritional assistance to nearly two million women and children.

BISP officials highlighted that 9.7 million Digital Social Protection Wallets have been opened to improve transparency, convenience, and financial inclusion. Payments under the current phase are being disbursed through these digital wallets.

The delegation was also briefed on the newly launched Benazir Hunarmand Program (BHP), which offers free market-oriented skills training to BISP beneficiaries and their family members to improve employment opportunities and livelihoods.

Secretary Amer Ali Ahmad also shared findings from a recent World Bank study, which revealed that BISP supports more than 10.2 million families, covering approximately 24 percent of households nationwide.

According to the study, every Rs1 transferred through BISP generates Rs2.34 in household income, while BISP-supported economic activity sustains around 1.66 million full-time jobs and contributes nearly Rs174 billion annually to Pakistan’s economy.

Speaking on the occasion, Faryal Talpur appreciated BISP’s ongoing reforms to enhance transparency, improve service delivery, promote financial inclusion, and accelerate digital transformation. She also acknowledged the programme’s significant contribution to poverty reduction, women’s empowerment, and human capital development, while stressing the importance of increasing public awareness and making BISP services more accessible and convenient for beneficiaries.
