Government Believes in Moving Forward Through Consensus, Not Confrontation: Rana Sanaullah
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

ISLAMABAD: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, has emphasized the need for dialogue and mutual cooperation in addressing Pakistan’s political and electoral challenges. In a recent interview, the senior political figure reiterated that the government is fully committed to democratic norms and believes in progressing through consensus and reconciliation, rather than confrontation and division.

This message comes at a time when the country is experiencing heightened political tension, legal disputes, and uncertainty over electoral processes. Rana Sanaullah’s comments aim to defuse growing polarization and bring political forces back to the negotiating table for the sake of national stability.

🏛️ Political Dialogue is the Only Way Forward

Rana Sanaullah highlighted that political differences are an inherent feature of any democracy, but the method to resolve those differences must always be dialogue, not street agitation or unilateral action. He said the current government under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif remains open to engaging with all political stakeholders, including the opposition, to find sustainable solutions to electoral and governance-related challenges.

“In any democracy, the true strength lies in negotiation, not in escalation. We believe in bringing everyone to the table and finding middle ground for the betterment of Pakistan,” Sanaullah said.

He urged that all political parties, regardless of ideological differences, should put national interest above party politics and prioritize the welfare of the people over scoring political points.

🧑‍⚖️ Imran Khan’s Judicial Custody: A Matter for the Courts

Commenting on the status of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, Rana Sanaullah clarified that the federal government has no role in granting or denying meetings with Khan, as he is currently in judicial custody.

“Whether or not anyone meets Imran Khan is a matter for the courts to decide. The judiciary is independent, and the government respects its domain,” he stated.

This clarification comes amid persistent allegations from PTI leadership that the government is obstructing access to Imran Khan, especially by party members and legal representatives. Sanaullah maintained that the judiciary’s independence is sacrosanct and should not be politicized.

🗳️ Reserved Seats Controversy: Legal Procedures Were Followed

Rana Sanaullah also addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the allocation of reserved seats in various legislatures, particularly those meant for women and minorities. He dismissed allegations of manipulation, stating that the constitutional and legal frameworks were strictly adhered to.

“The process regarding reserved seats is transparent and governed by the law. Any concerns should be addressed in the courts, not in the streets or press conferences,” he said.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has been at the center of this controversy, claiming that its right to reserved seats has been unfairly denied. The Election Commission of Pakistan and several courts are currently reviewing petitions and counter-petitions on this issue.

🔁 Impact of Repeated Allegations on Democratic Stability

The Prime Minister’s advisor lamented the culture of repeated and baseless allegations in Pakistani politics, which he said undermines public trust and damages democratic institutions. He referred to the contradictory statements issued by different PTI-affiliated groups as a source of confusion and instability.

“The repeated allegations, especially those lacking evidence, only weaken public faith in our institutions. We should all act responsibly,” Sanaullah emphasized.

He stressed the importance of fact-based political discourse, urging politicians, media outlets, and civil society to refrain from spreading misinformation, particularly in an already fragile political environment.

🏛️ Call to Return to Parliament

A major highlight of the interview was Rana Sanaullah’s appeal to all political parties to return to Parliament. He argued that legislative forums like the National Assembly and Senate are the correct platforms to resolve political and policy disputes.

“Boycotting Parliament or staging walkouts does not solve national problems. It only widens the gap between the public and their representatives,” he said.

He urged opposition parties, particularly PTI and its allied groups, to abandon their boycott and actively participate in parliamentary proceedings. Sanaullah believes that a functional and robust Parliament is essential for addressing issues like inflation, unemployment, national security, and electoral reforms.

📜 Government’s Commitment to Democratic Principles

Throughout the interview, Rana Sanaullah repeatedly reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democracy, constitutionality, and transparency. He said the government will continue to promote inclusive politics and uphold the rule of law without favor or discrimination.

“Our approach is rooted in constitutionalism. Whether it is about elections, judicial appointments, or policy decisions, we consult stakeholders and move forward through consensus,” he stated.

This message is intended to reassure the domestic audience, international observers, and investors that Pakistan’s political system remains on a democratic path, despite the tensions and crises it often encounters.

📈 Political Climate in Pakistan: A Brief Context

Pakistan’s political landscape has remained volatile since the removal of Imran Khan from office in April 2022 via a no-confidence motion. The months following his ouster have been marked by:

  • Mass arrests of PTI leaders and workers
  • Legal proceedings against Imran Khan
  • Protests and sit-ins across major cities
  • Disputed 2024 General Elections, with allegations of rigging and biased delimitation
  • Strained civil-military relations
  • Contentious reserved seats disputes

In this context, Rana Sanaullah’s conciliatory tone stands in contrast to the rhetoric coming from both opposition and certain government factions, which have often accused one another of undermining democracy.

🧩 Future of Political Dialogue and Electoral Reforms

Rana Sanaullah hinted that the government is open to electoral reforms, including improvements to election transparency, the use of technology, and better oversight of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). However, he emphasized that such reforms can only be undertaken with parliamentary consensus.

The advisor further suggested that dialogue-based solutions to political differences could lead to better governance outcomes, encourage foreign investment, and create a more stable political environment in the country.

🌐 International Implications

Pakistan’s political instability has also caught the attention of international partners, including the United States, European Union, and International Monetary Fund (IMF), all of whom have stressed the importance of transparency, accountability, and political stability for continued cooperation.

Statements like those from Rana Sanaullah signal to the international community that the current government is serious about democratic engagement and reform, even amid domestic challenges.

📝 Conclusion: Dialogue Over Division

In conclusion, Rana Sanaullah’s message serves as a timely reminder of the need for cooperation, not confrontation, in Pakistan’s political discourse. His call for consensus, transparency, and parliamentary engagement echoes the broader national sentiment that Pakistan must now focus on governance, economic recovery, and social cohesion rather than political warfare.

If his appeal is heeded, it could open the door to meaningful reform and renewed political stability. If ignored, Pakistan risks slipping further into political polarization and governance gridlock at a time when unity is more crucial than ever.
