According to experts, 85% of diabetic foot amputations can be prevented.
Dr. Ashu Rastogi, a doctor and an associate professor in the Department of Endocrinology, said that diabetes-related foot problems include ulcers and gangrene.
He said that more than 50% of hospital admissions for foot ulcers are due to diabetes, which increases the cost of treatment fivefold and often leads to amputation below the knee.
The doctor added that a diabetic foot infection patient spends 50% of his annual income on treatment and 20,0000 diabetic patients lose their feet every year.
However, the reality is that 85% of these foot amputations are completely preventable.
It should be noted that diabetes is the most common cause of leg amputations in the world and accidental injury is the second leading cause.
On the other hand, there is little awareness among doctors and paramedical staff about diabetes-related foot problems and the need to focus on this aspect will empower patients to take care of their own feet.
