KARACHI: Novak Djokovic narrowed his gap to a fifth US Open title as he advanced to the third round as rival Laszlo Djokovic retired in the third set after leading the opening two sets.
Both players had to seek the services of a physio during the match at the Arthrish Stadium. Djokovic, who won the gold medal in Paris, will now face Australia’s Alexey Popern, whom he has defeated at the Australian Open and this year’s Wimbledon, in the next round.
Germany’s Alexander Zverev defeated France’s Alexander Müller, who will now face Argentina’s Tomas H. Avery, who overcame compatriot Francisco Sairodolo. Women’s defending champion Coco Goff defeated Tetjana Maria, Iryna Sabalenka beat Italy’s Lucia Brunzetti.
