Paris, Cuban wrestler Mayan Lopez set a new record at the Paris Olympics, becoming the first athlete to win gold medals in the same event in five consecutive Olympic editions.
According to media reports, Mayan Lopez won the super heavyweight gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Paris Olympics, defeating Chile’s Yasmani Acosta six-nil in the final.
With this feat, he became the athlete to win the gold medal in the same event in five consecutive Olympics and established himself as the greatest athlete in super-heavyweight Greco wrestling.
No other athlete has won gold medals in individual events in more than four consecutive editions, the Cuban wrestler also won gold medals in the super heavyweight category of Greco wrestling at the 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympics.
He retired from wrestling in 2021 and did not compete in the last three years, but made a comeback for this Olympics and won once again.
Earlier, American Carl Lewis won gold in long jump, Michael Phelps in 200 meters medley in four consecutive Olympics. Al Orator of the United States won gold medals in the discus throw, wrestler Kaori Icho of Japan and Pawel Elstrom of Denmark won gold medals in sailing in four consecutive Olympics.
