PORT-AU-PRINCE: Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned from his post due to the takeover of the capital by criminal gangs, escalating regional conflicts and international pressure.
According to the World News Agency, the resignation of Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry came when 3,700 criminals who escaped from prisons as a result of an attack by armed groups, including their accomplices, occupied 80 percent of the capital’s territory.
These criminal gangs demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, on which other countries including the United States began efforts for a settlement.
It should be remembered that during the past few days, the Haitian government imposed a state of emergency after the attack on prisons by armed groups and the escape of more than three and a half thousand dangerous prisoners.
Since then, the tension in the country was on the rise and Prime Minister Ariel Henry was being pressured to resign at the international level as well. American leaders also met with him.
After the resignation today, a senior US official said Ariel Henry was free to stay in the capital or go anywhere else.
Guyana’s leader and Caribbean Community (CARICOM) President Irfan Ali said Ariel Henry would continue to serve as prime minister until an interim council and a caretaker prime minister were appointed.
It should be noted that 74-year-old Ariel Henry is a neurosurgeon by profession and took over the post of Prime Minister in July 2021 while also holding the post of President. Jail
