PM Shehbaz Sharif Reaffirms Affordable Housing Priority, Orders Faster Progress on Apna Ghar Scheme
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed that providing affordable housing to ordinary Pakistanis remains one of the government’s highest priorities, directing authorities to speed up implementation of the Prime Minister Apna Ghar Scheme and urging banks to expand housing finance.
Chairing a high-level review meeting on the progress of the housing initiative, the Prime Minister reviewed financing arrangements and the development status of various housing projects under the scheme.
Addressing the meeting, Shehbaz Sharif said the government launched the Apna Ghar Scheme to help low- and middle-income families achieve the dream of home ownership. He stressed that ensuring every deserving citizen has access to a secure home is a key objective of his administration.
The Prime Minister instructed all relevant institutions to accelerate work on the scheme and called upon both public and private sector banks to provide maximum financing to ensure its success. He also directed officials to formulate a comprehensive strategy for both vertical (high-rise) and horizontal housing development models.
Officials informed the meeting that banks have so far approved Rs204 billion in financing under the Apna Ghar Scheme, while Rs27 billion has already been disbursed to beneficiaries.
The meeting was also told that the Ministry of Housing and Works and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) are conducting weekly reviews to closely monitor progress and improve the pace of implementation.
The session was attended by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Housing and Works Minister Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, along with senior government officials.
