The goal was Messi’s 126th for Argentina, further extending his record as the country’s all-time leading international scorer.
The 39-year-old superstar became visibly emotional during the farewell, including during the national anthem. After the match, Messi reflected on his extraordinary journey with Argentina, describing playing for the national team as one of the most beautiful experiences of his life.
He also said he would deeply miss wearing Argentina’s shirt and being surrounded by the national team’s supporters, while indicating that he would now stand behind the team as a fan.

Messi concluded his international career as Argentina’s most-capped player, having made 208 appearances for the national team over 21 years.
