Veteran Indian Actor Nana Patekar Dies at 75
Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar has died at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa.
According to Indian media reports, Patekar was found unconscious at his residence in Goa early Thursday morning and was subsequently taken to a nearby Manipal Hospital for emergency treatment.
Doctors reportedly performed CPR for around 45 minutes in an effort to revive the veteran actor. However, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead at around 5:20am.
Senior doctor Shekhar Salkar said Patekar appeared to have passed away before reaching the hospital. Medical officials said the immediate cause was cardiac arrest, while the exact cause of death would be determined following a post-mortem examination. A medico-legal case has also reportedly been registered.
A Distinguished Career in Indian Cinema
Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Maharashtra, Nana Patekar began his artistic journey in theatre before establishing himself as one of the most distinctive performers in Hindi and Marathi cinema.
Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he became known for his powerful dialogue delivery, emotional intensity and ability to completely immerse himself in challenging characters.
Patekar worked not only as an actor but also as a filmmaker and screenwriter. His acclaimed performances earned him three National Film Awards along with several Filmfare honours.
His notable films included Parinda, Krantiveer, Tirangaa, Khamoshi and Welcome. He also earned widespread appreciation in Marathi cinema, particularly for his performance in Natsamrat.
Tributes Pour In
News of Patekar’s death prompted tributes from prominent figures across India’s political and film communities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as an exceptionally intense and distinctive actor whose memorable performances would continue to be remembered by future generations. Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed grief, calling his death a major loss to the world of cinema.
Actors including Riteish Deshmukh and Akshay Kumar also paid tribute to the veteran performer. Deshmukh recalled working with Patekar in Welcome and Housefull 5, while Akshay Kumar praised his distinctive voice, intensity and authenticity on screen.
Marathi actor Sayaji Shinde also expressed shock over the news, saying he was deeply saddened and initially found it difficult to believe that the reports of Patekar’s death were true.
Patekar’s death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Hindi and Marathi cinema, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and influential contributions to Indian filmmaking.
