PTA Announces Action Against WhatsApp Accounts
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced plans to block Whats App accounts associated with mobile SIMs that are inactive, cancelled or no longer in use.
The telecom regulator said the move is aimed at strengthening digital security and preventing the misuse of Whats App accounts linked to inactive mobile numbers for fraud and other illegal activities.
According to the authority, the process of blocking such WhatsApp accounts could begin at any time. Users have therefore been advised to ensure that their WhatsApp accounts remain linked to valid and active mobile numbers.
PTA had previously conducted an awareness campaign for several weeks, urging users to verify the status of the SIMs connected to their WhatsApp accounts and take timely action where necessary.
The authority also advised people who have changed their mobile numbers to use Whats App’s “Change Number” feature without delay. This allows users to transfer their account information to their current number and maintain control of their WhatsApp account.
PTA has further urged mobile users to check the current status of their SIMs and replace or update inactive numbers where required.
The regulator said the initiative is intended to curb fraudulent activity and improve the overall security of digital communications in Pakistan.
The move could also affect Pakistanis living abroad who continue to use WhatsApp accounts registered with Pakistani SIMs without transferring those accounts to active SIMs in their country of residence.
Users are advised to review their WhatsApp account settings and ensure that the number associated with their account is active and under their control to avoid potential disruption.
