Lahore, 08 July 2026: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif turned the grief of Kahna tragedy into a solid commitment to make Punjab’s homes safe; as she has decided to launch “Apna Ghar, Mahfooz Ghar” programme to prevent tragedies like Kahna. She noted that after Kahna incident, neither a fake committee was formed nor was the file buried, rather a straight decision was taken and relief was provided straight to the bereaved families.
She said that with the success of ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar,’ a new chapter has begun in the history of Punjab, as over 100,000 homes have been built across the province; and now existing homes will be made safe. She added that scope of “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” programme has been further expanded, as 02 new categories have been introduced under ‘Apna Ghar, Mahfooz Ghar’ programme, under which Rs. 5 lakh will be given for renovation of dilapidated houses with weak roofs and damaged structures; and Rs. 10 lakh will be given on interest-free easy instalments for construction of a new building storey or additional floor.

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired an important meeting on ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ and ‘Apni Zameen Apna Ghar’ programmes; in which she was presented a report on the remarkable success of ‘Punjab Pakistan Pavilion’ in Baku; and a special documentary in this regard was screened.

They said that applications have been received from over 1,278,000 homeless families across Punjab.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed the relevant authorities that second category of ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ is released for the public within three days; as in times of crisis, it is not statements but visible actions that constitute good governance. She approved a proposal for constructing an additional floor with a new category of Rs. 10 lakh, and a proposal for Rs. 5 lakh for repairing dilapidated or worn-out roofs. Relevant authorities briefed her that under “Apni Zameen Apna Ghar” (Own Land, Own Home) scheme, 2,000 plots were given in 23 districts; and a report was presented on rehabilitation and development works in the areas under “Apni Zameen Apna Ghar” scheme.
She said that the 2,000 homeless families who were given free plots by the government will now also be given loans to build homes. She directed the relevant authorities that easy loans for building homes be made even more easier. She added that those whose homes are dilapidated or have weak roofs, Punjab Government will assist in making them safe and better. She highlighted that ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ and all associated programmes are Punjab Government’s flagship projects, and she will not tolerate any negligence; as no burden should be placed on the poor, nor should there be any change in the loan acquisition regulations.
